Yoga has many facets beyond the physical postures. In the West it seems that many classes focus on the physical while bypassing the importance of breath, mind, and spirit. The real point of yoga, and what makes it different than a standard exercise class, is its ability to address the being as a whole--not just the body.
THY classes include the whole being.
We align the body to enhance flexibility, strength, balance, and energy flow. This helps to provide fitness, body awareness, focus, mobility, coordination, circulation, energy, poise, and healthier posture. Postures are frequently used as a stepping stone on the path to awareness of the breath/body/mind connection, spirit, and noticing thought patterns. Also poses can develop enough comfort and relaxation in the body and mind so that you may grow more mindful and present.
Breath awareness and healthy breathing are imperative. After all we breathe all day! First we learn how we breathe--such as breath location, speed, depth, steadiness. Then we shift the breath to the manner that is most healthy. This can calm the nervous system, decrease heart rate, reduce blood pressure, balance energy levels, enhance brain functions, and reduce general feelings of anxiety.
Mindfulness, meditation, and simply drawing awareness to thought patterns can alter your life in significant ways. These tools reduce unhealthy stress, focus the mind, bring on a state of balance, and make it easier to be compassionate without losing yourself in the dramas around you.
Spiritual and Life guidance may come in the form of an inspiration during one of the activities listed above, something said in class, or a private session focused on seeing Life in a new way. When we live a more present Life, unhealthy stresses diminish, anxiety wanes, happiness grows, blood pressure drops, some diseases lessen or leave entirely, and you notice miracles. This is what yoga is all about.
